M.Ö. 295’de M.Ö. Ptolemaios tarafından kurulan ünlü İskenderiye kütüphanesi, antik dünyadaki en büyük metin koleksiyonuna ev sahipliği yapmış ve Helenistik burs alanının bereketli bir yerleşim alanı olmuştur. 1977’de Almanca olarak yayınlanan Rudolf Blum’un simgesel çalışması, Kyrene’in Kallimachos’unun sadece Alexandrian kütüphanesinin ikinci yönetmeni olmadığını ve bugüne kadar hala kullanılmakta olan iki temel akademik araç mucidi olduğunu savunuyor: kütüphane kataloğu ve “biyobibliografik “Referans çalışma. Kallimachos, kütüphanenin envanter listelerini, Pinakes olarak adlandırılan ve her bir eseri kapsamlı bir şekilde tanımlayan ve sınıflandıran ve bir Yunan ulusal bibliyografyası ve daha sonraki tarihli Yunan literatürü bibliyografik listeleri için kaynak ve paradigma haline getiren kitaplara genişletti. Kyrene’li Kallimakhos (M.Ö. 310-240) Libya’daki Kyrene’de doğmuş olan Kallimakhos Atina’da peripatetik Praxiphanes’ten felsefe eğitimi almıştı. Sonrada hayatının sonuna kadar kalacağı İskenderiye’ye gelerek burada ilkin bir gramer okulu açmış ve öğretmen olarak çalışmıştı. Eratosthenes, Byzantion’lu Aristophanes ve Rhodos’lu Apollonios onun öğrencileri arasında yer alan ünlü kişilerdi. Bazı araştırmacıların kabul ettiğine göre, aşağı yukarı M.Ö. 244 yılında Zenodotos’un ölümünden sonra, onun yerine İskenderiye kütüphanesinin başına geçmiş ve M.Ö. 240’taki ölümüne kadar da bu görevde kalmıştı. Kütüphanedeki çalışmalarında şairlerin ve onların eserlerinin yer aldığı elyazmalarının kataloglanması işini üstlenmişti.
 
Aynı zamanda çok çalışkan bir bibliyografya yazarı olan Kallimakhos edebiyat alanından ünlü kişileri 20 kitap halinde geniş kapsamlı bir çalışmayla listelemişti. Bu çalışma sadece bir katalog olmaktan çok uzaktı: 
Başlıca yazarların kısa yaşam öykülerini de içeriyordu. Yazarlar sekiz başlık altında sınıflandırılmıştı: 1. Dram şairleri, 2. epik ve lirik şairler, 3. yasa düzenleyiciler, 4. filozoflar, 5. tarihçiler, 6. hatipler, 7. güzel konuşma ustaları (retorik ustaları), 8. diğer yazarlar. Kallimakhos’un hazırladığı bu listelerde kütüphanede her kitap rulosuna iliştirilen etiketin içeriğinden başka, eserin başlığı ve yazarının isminin yanı sıra, başlangıcında yer alan kelimeler, satır sayısı da kayıtlıydı. Kallimakhos çok bilgili bir insandı. Yaşadığı dönemin de özelliğine uygun olarak derin ve son derece çeşitli bilgi sahibiydi. Sayısının 800 civarında olduğu kabul edilen çeşitli konularda eserler yazmıştı.

Eski Yunan kütüphanelerinde yapılan en büyük ve en ünlü kataloğun Kallimakhos tarafından İskenderiye Kütüphanesi için hazırlandığı bilinmektedir. İskenderiye limanına gemi ile gelen kitaplar daha kütüphaneye girer girmez burada geliş yerlerine ve bunları satan kişilerin adlarına göre, ayrıca kütüphanede yerleştirildiği yere göre işaretlenerek kitap ruloları üzerine etiketler konuluyordu. Ayrıca kütüphane içinde yer de belirtilmekteydi. Bu kütüphanede tasnif ile ilgili çalışmaların yapıldığı anlaşılmaktadır. Bu çalışmalardan başka, kütüphanede toplanan malzemenin gruplara ayrılması, yazmaların yazarlarının belirtilmesi, üzerlerine eleştiriler yapılması, belli imla kurallarına uyularak tek nüsha olan yazmaların çoğaltılması, metinlerin karşılaştırılması, yıpranmış olanların aslına uygun olarak standart metinler halinde onarılması, yabancı dildeki kitapların çevrilmesi, bibliyografya çalışmalarının yapılması, bütün bu çalışmalar, Kallimakhos’un meydana getireceği katalog için uygun zemin hazırlamıştır (Yıldız, 1985, s. 328 ).

Düşünür, Araştırmacı Yazar, Şair. 1983 yılından buyana ihracat profesyoneli olarak çalışan Levent Ağaoğlu, 1997-2001 yılları arasında Hong Kong’da yaşadı; yaklaşan Büyük Asya Yüzyılı’nın ayak seslerini duydu hep. İsmail Gaspıralı’nın “Dil’de, Fikir’de; İş’te Birlik” idealinin peşinde koşarak Türk Evi, Düşünce ve İş Ocağı kitap serileri üzerinde çalışıyor; mütefekkir ve müteşebbis gözlem ve birikimlerini yazıya geçiriyor.
